New Aluminium Pump Bottles – How to Open and Why It Happens

We’ve just launched our new screen-printed aluminium packaging — designed to be more sustainable, more recyclable, and far better for the planet 🌏

We absolutely love it.
But like all meaningful upgrades, it has come with a few early-stage quirks as we fine-tune the engineering.

The most common one is a pump that won’t pop open.

Why does this happen?

Aluminium uses shallower, more precise threads than plastic. That’s part of what makes it stronger, more recyclable, and longer-lasting — but it also means:

If the base of the pump cap isn’t tightened quite enough, the top pump head won’t unlock and simply keeps spinning, even though it looks like it should.

Over 90% of pump issues we’re asked about are simply this, and we can resolve it in a second.

It’s not a fault — it just needs a quick reset.

How to open your pump (30 seconds)

Then follow these steps:

Step 1 – Lock the base

Hold the bottle firmly and turn the base of the pump (the threaded collar) clockwise until it feels snug.
This locks the two upper parts of the pump into position.

Step 2 – Pop the pump

Now gently turn the pump head anti-clockwise (to the left).
After about half a turn, it will pop up and unlock.

That’s it — your pump is ready to use.

If it just keeps spinning

No problem — just reset it:

  1. Unscrew the whole pump from the bottle

  2. Screw it back on firmly and evenly

  3. Then turn the pump head anti-clockwise again

This almost always fixes it instantly.

Is my product safe?

Yes — completely.
This is a mechanical alignment issue, not a product or hygiene issue.

  • neck seals

  • assembly consistency

Refill bottles with a screw cap (no pump, no plastic).

This means:

  • You’ll be able to keep your existing pump

  • Order future bottles with a simple aluminium screw cap

  • Then swap your pump onto the new bottle

  • And continue using the same pump across multiple refills

This dramatically reduces:

  • plastic waste

  • manufacturing footprint

  • and packaging complexity

It’s a small design shift that makes a big environmental difference.
