World Oceans Day 2026

The Sheds of Woollamia – Jervis Bay

For the sixth year running, PhycoHealth, Jervis Bay Brewing Co, and Jervis Bay Mussel Co are coming together to celebrate World Oceans Day — and to raise funds for the Australian Marine Conservation Society.

Over the past five years, together with our local community, we’ve collectively raised more than $5,000 each year through event donations, beer sales, raffles, hampers, and community support. Even better — those donations have been matched, amplifying their impact.

This year, every dollar raised will again be matched.

That means every $1 becomes $3 for marine conservation.

And this year, we want to make it the biggest one yet.

Because as Sir David Attenborough — who turned 100 this year — recently reminded the world:

“The ocean can recover faster than we ever imagined… it could be the frontier of Earth’s sustainable future.”

We believe that too.

The ocean is not just scenery. It is the engine of climate regulation, oxygen production, nutrient cycling, biodiversity, and ultimately, human survival. It is also the driving force behind everything we do at PhycoHealth.

This month, we are proud to announce the upcoming release of our latest scientific publication in the prestigious journal:

Advances in Temperate Phyconomy: Algal Harvest and Cultivation in Globally Distributed Temperate Waters, Developments in Applied Phycology

Featuring our paper:

“Addressing Planetary Boundary Breaches with Land-Based, Temperate, Macroalgal Cultivation”

The publication explores how cultivated seaweed systems can help address some of the greatest environmental challenges facing humanity — from nutrient pollution and carbon imbalance to regenerative food production and circular economies.

At PhycoHealth, we believe oceans are not simply something to protect from damage.

They are part of the solution.

This year we’re proudly calling ourselves:

The Sheds of Woollamia – Jervis Bay

Three local businesses. Three marine-inspired systems. Three regenerative approaches.

Good Food and a Good Time at our World Oceans Day Dinner on June 8..

  • Jervis Bay Brewing Co
  • Jervis Bay Mussels
  • PhycoHealth

Together, we represent a uniquely local trifecta of sustainable industry — all founded and led by environmental scientists working to create genuinely regenerative systems within our coastal community. Try our sustainable wares  as you help us to

Whether it’s sustainable aquaculture, regenerative seaweed cultivation, or community-driven brewing culture, each of our businesses is connected by one thing:

Giving more back than we take.

And honestly… we think that’s worth celebrating.

The Legendary Marine Trivia Quiz Returns

Every year, one of the highlights of the night is the Marine Trivia Quiz — hosted by Pia.

Winners take home:

  • Jervis Bay Brewing Co beers
  • Brewing merch
  • PhycoHealth hampers
  • And a whole lot of ocean glory

This year’s quiz will dive into some wild new discoveries and marine conservation stories from the past year.

So here are a few sneak-preview hints…

Did You Know?

🐋 Whales help fertilise the ocean?

Whales don’t just inspire us — they help ecosystems thrive. Their nutrient-rich plumes help fertilise phytoplankton growth, which in turn produces massive amounts of the oxygen we breathe.

🌊 The ocean absorbs around 90% of excess planetary heat?

Without oceans buffering Earth’s climate system, global temperatures would already be dramatically more extreme.

🪸 Kelp forests and seaweed systems can capture carbon incredibly fast?

Some seaweed species are among the fastest growing organisms on Earth — with certain species capable of growing over half a metre per day.

🧬 Seaweed contains unique glycans not found in land plants?

These complex marine sugars are now being explored globally for applications in gut health, skin regeneration, biomaterials, and medical technologies.

(Yes… that includes some of the science behind PhycoHealth.)

🐟 More than 3 billion people rely on seafood as a major protein source?

Healthy oceans are directly tied to food security, livelihoods, and coastal resilience around the world.

🌱 Marine systems may become one of the biggest frontiers for regenerative industries?

From carbon capture to wastewater remediation, biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, sustainable food, and ecosystem restoration — the “blue economy” is only just beginning.

Come Celebrate the Ocean With Us

This event has always been about more than fundraising.

It’s about community.

It’s about curiosity.

It’s about reminding ourselves that solutions can be joyful, local, collaborative, and regenerative.

So come down to the sheds.

  • Grab a beer.
  • Eat some mussels.
  • Talk seaweed.
  • Test your marine trivia knowledge.

And help us raise funds for the future of our oceans.

Because if every $ becomes $3.00…

Imagine what a community can become together.
