Seaweed & Health

Seaweed is one of the longest known foods used for human health and in medicine. Archeology sites from 13,000 years ago in the South Americas demonstrate how the first humans travelled over continents, with seaweed used to sustain them. Our own Australian first people likely used seaweed for longer than that. Ancient Chinese pharmacopoeia identified certain seaweed that could eliminate gut parasites. Now modern human clinical trials are showing how seaweed can contribute to eliminating some of our chronic modern world diseases.

  • Proteins & Peptides

From about the age of 30, we start to lose muscle mass at a rate of 3-8% each decade, and our immune system and brain function also rely a lot on different amino acids from protein. Keeping up protein is important and you need to be increase your intake throughout life and eat about 1.5g for every kg you weigh, every day. Adequate protein will do more than build muscle; it will contribute to better sleeping patterns and better mood, it is important in preventing osteoporosis, and can improve the recovery from hip fractures.

  • Amino Acids

Many people are surprised when we tell them how rich in protein our seaweed is, but also that it contains all of the essential amino acids. These amino acids can be used to build up diverse proteins such as collagen in connective tissue or muscle tissue.

Read more about which amino acids you can find in our seaweed and how it compares to other protein profiles.

  • Omega 3's

Omega-3 is vital for a number of mechanisms in the human body and is most commonly accepted as being important for cardiovascular (heart) health and as a core nutrient for the support of the anti-inflammatory processes. However this is only the tip of the iceberg for the global health stress caused by a deficiency of Omega-3. Our founder has contributed to research through clinical studies that demonstrate the importance of Omega-3. Unless you are eating seafood four times per week, you are most probably deficient in Omega-3.

  • Anti-oxidants

Our specific type of seaweed is thought to have components that stimulates the production of our own natural anti-oxidant molecues (SOD). But our own research has shown that the levels of anti-oxidants in seaweeds can vary. Not only across different types of seaweed, but how we cultivate our seaweed also matters, which is why your source is important.

  • Micro Nutrients

Most people understand that trace elements and micronutrients, such as iron, iodine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and boron, are essential nutrients to keep our body system functioning properly; not least of all our bone, immune and hormonal systems. Many of us have chronic lifelong deficiencies of nutrients without knowing it until we are faced with either old age or a disease. Seaweed is a potent source for many micronutrients that are deficient in land plants or low meat diets, a little bit of seaweed every day can be a good contribution to keeping up lifelong and important trace elements.

  • Vitamins

There are a number of different vitamins that can be found in our seaweed, or precursors to important vitamins, as well as protectors of vitamins.

Some of these vitamins are pretty unique in the plant world and include B12 as well as other B vitamins. In addition, Vitamin C, E and K are all present in our whole green seaweed products.

Further, our seaweed is super rich in the precursor of Vitamin A, beta cartotene.

Finally, some of our most precious Vitamins might not need supplementation if we protected our reserves of them. Vitamin D is such a vitamin that we can protect with the protective Boron source that is unique in our marine based seaweed.

Get, Make and Protect your vitamins with our PhycoHealth foods and you might not need to supplement them.

  • Fibre

Our gut microbiomes are complex ecosystems, much like a rainforest soil type, and should host many different types of bacteria. The problem with the modern diet is that it is often deficient in important foods, primarily fibres and phenolic compounds from plants. Importantly, you should supply the microbiome diversity in your gut with a diversity of dietary fibres, because different bacteria eat different types of fibre. Our research has shown how our Ulvaspecies 84. seaweed fibre (Seafibre) contributes to health through the gut.

  • Iodine

Iodine is a complicated trace element that is ESSENTIAL for our health, but it is only required in TRACE amounts. You only need about a teaspoon of iodine for your whole life; but it is essential throughout life. Indeed the deficiency of iodine globally is the leading cause of brain damage according to the World Health Organisation. In Australia, iodine deficiency is prevalent in about 50% of children and pregnant or breastfeeding women as our soils are not generally rich in iodine. Unless you are getting iodine from regular seafood consumption or iodised salt, then you may be at risk.

Seaweed for your skin

Seaweed and seaweed extracts have been used on skin for 1000's of years, with the simple ambition of soothing and creating moisture on the skin.

However, these most ancient plants on the planet host a hugely diverse and evolved suite of molecules - most of which we can't even describe yet.

There are seaweeds molecules that support the foundational tissue structure of our skin, interact directly with our own cells to trigger biological functions, protect and repair from oxidation and stressors, as well as support a healthy skin microbiome.

Our mission is to unlock the secrets of seaweeds and a future of human skin health and repair that we can't even imagine yet.

Join us at the start of the journey and bring exclusive seaweed molecules into your daily routine with our PhycoDerm range of skin care products.

  • Anti-Oxidants

One of the big impacts on skin throughout life is of course the stress from UV exposure and oxidation of skin tissue. The protection and maintenance to skin from anti-oxidant compounds are well established, but there are many different processes and different anti-oxidant molecules that are needed to protect skin in different ways. Specific seaweed and unique molecules will have vastly different effects of how effective anti-oxidant processes are. We have selected molecules specifically for this purpose in our PhycoTide extract used in Cleanse, Purify and Soothe.

We also make sure to complement seaweed anti-oxidant molecules with other well established anti-oxidant ingredients, such as from Kakadu plum and Rosemary.

  • Collagen Protection

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, and it exists in a number of forms that have very specific functions in different organs. It is most often associated with skin however, as a breakdown of collagen is a well-known sign of skin-aging and the formation of wrinkles. Other proteins in the skin are also important here including elastin, which gives the skin it’s flexibility.

The optimal strategy for aging skin should start early and includes what you eat, how you sleep, moderate exercise and your skin care regime. That is why we developed our Gut and Skin Health bundle as there are amino acids, micro-nutrients and anti-oxidants that will support and protect collagen production from the inside, while our research on how anti-oxidants and molecules that shield our collagen from destructive enzymes are formulated into our PhycoDerm skin care range.

  • Hydration

Our seaweed molecules hold more than 2000x their weight in water - some of the most hydrated molecules on planet earth. Because hydration is an essential part of skin function and health, delivering these moisture laden molecules to protect skin from the outside is a no brainer.

  • Wound Repair

Our research is driving forward a future of skin repair in a clinical setting, but we want you to access the skin care benefits as well. Please watch this space as we expand on how our seaweed molecules work in skin repair and what this means for their function in your daily skin care regime.
