Your Pump Is Outside the Bottle for a Reason
A small change to your order. A much bigger change for skincare packaging.
For years, skincare has been sold as though every new bottle needs a new plastic pump.
Use the product. Finish the bottle. Throw away the pump. Repeat.
We think there is a better way.
Our skincare bottles are now made from aluminium and closed with an aluminium cap. Your pump is supplied separately because it is not disposable packaging. It is a useful part that can be kept, cleaned and used again with your next bottle.
That means you can order your favourite skincare product once with its reusable pump, then choose the aluminium-capped bottle for future orders.
No new plastic pump every time.
No unnecessary dispenser attached to every refill.
And when you order without a replacement pump, we can send your skincare in a fully plastic-free packaging configuration to your door.
The surprisingly difficult little pump
The global beauty industry is estimated to produce more than 120 billion units of packaging every year.
That is around 329 million bottles, jars, tubes, lids, pumps and other packaging components every day.
A large proportion of beauty packaging is difficult to recover through ordinary recycling systems. It may be too small for sorting equipment, made from mixed materials, or manufactured from plastics for which there is no practical recycling market. Pumps and droppers are specifically identified among the harder beauty-packaging formats to recycle.
We have been able to replace the conventional plastic skincare bottle.
We can use aluminium caps.
We can remove plastic from our shipping materials.
And then we arrive at one stubbornly useful little component:
the pump.
A skincare pump may look like one simple piece of plastic, but it is usually a small mechanical device. Depending on its design, it can contain different plastics, a metal spring, seals and other components that ordinary recycling systems cannot easily separate.
It is rather astounding that this one little component can be the thing standing between conventional skincare packaging and a genuinely plastic-free skincare order.
So we considered our options.
We could attach a fresh plastic pump to every bottle and continue replacing a perfectly functional component whenever the skincare ran out.
Or we could treat the pump as what it really is:
a reusable piece of equipment—not disposable packaging.
We chose the second option.
This only works with your participation
Removing plastic from skincare is not simply a packaging decision we can make behind the scenes.
It requires a different relationship between the product, the packaging and the person using it.
We provide:
- a durable aluminium bottle
- an aluminium closure for storage and shipping
- a reusable pump that can be transferred between bottles
- a compact refillable travel jar for customers who prefer to decant a smaller amount
- plastic-free shipping materials when the order does not include a new plastic accessory
You make the system work by keeping the parts that still have a useful life.
When your bottle is empty, remove the pump, clean and dry it carefully, and place it into your next bottle. The empty aluminium bottle can then enter established metal recycling streams.
One pump can serve many bottles.
That is the shift.
We have redesigned the bottle. Now we are asking you to help us redesign the habit.
For decades, a new plastic pump has simply appeared with every skincare bottle—whether the customer actually needed another one or not.
We do not think plastic should remain the automatic choice simply because it has traditionally been included for free.
Your first pump is complimentary because we want you to have the correct dispenser for your skincare.
After that, we are placing it lovingly in your care.
Keep it.
Clean it.
Reuse it.
And try not to lose it in the mysterious bathroom cupboard where all useful accessories eventually disappear.
We love giving our customers useful things. We are rather less enthusiastic about repeatedly giving you plastic that you already own.
How to order
Your first bottle
Choose your skincare product and add the matching reusable pump.
Your first pump is complimentary because we want every customer to have the correct dispenser for their product.
The pump will arrive beside your bottle rather than attached to it.
This is intentional.
Your pump is outside the bottle because it has a life beyond this order.
Your next bottle
Choose the aluminium-capped bottle only and reuse the pump you already have.
Because there is no new plastic dispenser in the order, your skincare can be sent in our plastic-free packaging configuration.
You receive a fresh, sealed bottle of skincare without automatically receiving another piece of plastic.
Need another pump?
Replacement pumps are available for $5.
You may need a second pump for another bathroom or another compatible product. Your original pump may also eventually reach the end of its useful life.
We do not pretend that a plastic pump will last forever.
We simply believe it should be used for as long as it remains clean, functional and fit for purpose, rather than being replaced every time the product runs out.
Prefer a smaller option?
Our refillable travel jar lets you carry a small amount of your favourite skincare without purchasing another full-size plastic container.
Fill it from your aluminium bottle, use it while travelling, then wash and dry it thoroughly before refilling.
For hygiene, avoid continually topping fresh product onto older product remaining in the jar.
Why aluminium?
Aluminium gives us the durability and product protection needed for skincare while allowing the main container to remain free from plastic.
It is lightweight, robust and widely recyclable.
Most importantly, it allows us to separate two things that the skincare industry has traditionally treated as one disposable package:
the bottle that holds the product and the pump that dispenses it.
The bottle can be recycled.
The pump can be reused.
Neither needs to be discarded simply because the skincare has run out.
Why not attach the pump before shipping?
Because once a new pump is fitted to every bottle, it is easy to treat it as part of the disposable pack.
Sending it separately makes the intention visible.
Your pump is outside the bottle because it has a life beyond this order.
It also allows customers who already have the appropriate pump to order only what they need.
Less material.
Less waste.
More flexibility.
Is this a refill system?
It is a different kind of refill system.
Many conventional refill models ask customers to pour a product from a flexible plastic pouch into another container.
We are doing something simpler.
We are asking you to retain the functional dispensing component and replace only the recyclable aluminium container holding the fresh product.
You receive a new, hygienically filled and sealed bottle of skincare while reusing the part that does not need to be manufactured again.
You are not refilling an old bottle.
You are reusing the pump.
What about cleanliness?
Your fresh skincare bottle remains sealed with its aluminium cap until you are ready to use it.
Before moving a pump to a new bottle:
- Remove it from the empty bottle.
- Wash the external and product-contact components carefully with warm water and an appropriate cleanser.
- Pump clean water through the mechanism.
- Allow every part to dry completely.
- Insert it into the new bottle without unnecessarily touching the internal stem.
Do not transfer a pump between different products unless it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried.
If a pump becomes damaged, difficult to clean or no longer dispenses properly, it should be replaced.
Why your participation matters
True plastic reduction cannot be achieved by a skincare company acting alone.
We can redesign the materials.
We can change the bottles.
We can remove unnecessary plastic from the parcel.
But a reusable system only works when the reusable part is actually reused.
So yes, we are involving you.
Lovingly.
We are making it slightly harder to build an accidental private collection of free plastic pumps under the bathroom sink.
Your first pump is on us.
After that, before adding another one, we will gently ask:
Do you really need another pump—or do you already have one that works perfectly well?
Free plastic is still plastic.
When thousands of customers keep and reuse one small pump across many bottles, a seemingly tiny decision becomes a meaningful reduction in unnecessary packaging.
A planetary shift is built from ordinary decisions
Plastic reduction will not come from one perfect material or one dramatic promise.
It will come from redesigning thousands of everyday systems that currently assume everything should be used once.
A skincare pump is a small object.
But multiplied across every product, every bathroom and every reorder, those little objects become an enormous stream of difficult-to-recycle packaging.
By keeping your pump, choosing the aluminium-capped bottle and reusing the pieces that still work, you are participating in a more practical model of skincare.
Not less convenient.
Not less hygienic.
Simply more thoughtful.
Your pump is outside the bottle for a reason.
Keep it. Reuse it. Help us change what a skincare refill can look like.
